In the Kitchen with the Candlestick: quick makeover

September 30, 2018

I've had these candlesticks from Ikea for a long time - in fact one of them was a 'gift' (ahem) from my good friend (she knows where it really came from)! Anyway they just didn't have much pizzazz so I thought I'd try out some of my new chalk paint from Amelie Prager, and play about with dark wax.

I gave them a good clean and got any residue candle wax off, and used a bright turquoise chalk paint called Esmeralda from Amelie Prager. It's slim pickings for chalk paint in Italy And this one is super affordable from Amazon.  I applied it using a good soft brush nice and thinly so as not to end up with lots of drips and blobs which you don't want (I like to call them legs and tears - I learnt the term when I went wine tasting - something to do with wine sticking to the glass and alcohol content!)!

So I ended up applying 3 coats to get a good coverage; these candlesticks are dark and shiny so it's not surprising but with a thicker (and more expensive) chalk paint you might get away with 2 coats.

By this time I'd moved out of the garden and into the kitchen for some waxing :)  I used a waxing brush and clear wax to begin with, applying it thinly and quickly to get a nice even coverage. I then played about with some dark wax which I applied with a rag.  The phrase wax on wax off is particularly useful here - put dark wax, buff dark wax off with a clean cloth. AND if you add tk much dark wax, a little clear wax on a clean cloth will help buff it off and blend it.

I also made a little sample board and video of me doing some waxing here.

Now these candlesticks are more of a feature than just sat in the corner of my room now asking for any attention!
